Grace Uncovered 9“The Scripture and the Gospel” Intro.  Begin to describe my early view of the bible.  Aesop’s fables or moral stories to follow and learn wisdom.  We sometimes grow up missing the point of the Bible.  Speak to the issue of the bible is a story.  We are in God’s story not God in our story.  The bible is one story not two stories.  I enter God’s story by faith and participate in His purpose to make this world new.  40 authors and 66 books all one continuous story.  Not about our little self story.Peterson, “Eat this Book”  We will learn that coming to right standing before God has always been one way.  By faith.  The OT and NT is one story and one gospel.

    Galatians 3

1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you £that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed £among you as crucified? 2This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4Have you suffered (experienced)so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?  Paul makes it plan that they received grace through the Spirit and he works in us by faith.5Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?—6just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”£ 7Therefore know (be sure) that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”£ 9So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. Now it actually says that the SCRIPTURE did something.  It saw something coming or foreseeing something that God would do.  That is very curious to me when I read it.I want to bring out two opposing points here that has challenged my understanding of the Gospel.  Everything about our lives revolves around the Gospel.  We do not start with the Gospel and then move onto something else. (15:00) 1.    We can only know/understand the Gospel through the Scripture.2.   We can only know and understand the scripture through the Gospel.Everything in the scripture is all about the gospel.  To miss this can mess you up forever. Now this verse opens up a very important truth about the SCRIPTURE.  Paul refers to Genesis 12:3.  God comes to Abraham not the other way around and also we know that at that time there was no Scripture written.Genesis was written years after Abraham by Moses.  How does Paul understand the scriptures?  Now let’s learn some more heady terms.  We have already discussed Faith – Justification – Sanctification.  Theological terms. Now we will deal with a few more.

    ·        Inspiration (Plenary = all)

2 Tim. 3:16 – All scripture is God breathed.  Matt. 19:4,5 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who £made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’£ 5and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined/cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? Jesus quotes Genesis 2:24. 24Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Jesus says that God said that… but going to Genesis Moses says that in a commentary of the story.  What I am pointing out is that Jesus says that what Moses said wrote is what God says about the issue.  Acts 4:25 25who £by the mouth of Your servant David have said:    ‘Why did the nations rage,    And the people plot vain things? Peter preaches this after Pentecost.  And it says that God spoke through David and said, … and quotes Psalm 2.  Even though David wrote it God said it and the same for Moses and all of the others. That is inspiration. Jesus says that God said what Moese wrote and Peter says the David wrote what God said.  And Timothy is told that all is inspired.·        Infallibility – This means that “you can trust it’’.  Many simply say yes I believe what Jesus says but not the others so much.  Pick and choose what they want.  Not good. The fact is they do not know what even Jesus says and if they did they would not like it either.  Paul is saying that the word of God or SCRIPTURE existed prior to it being written.  Trust it and Abraham heard it and believed.  6just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”£ 7Therefore know (be sure) that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.  Notice he believed God not he believed IN God.He trust what God said.  Do you believe in what God says?    It is infallible.  These men did not just write their own thoughts but wrote exactly what God said.  You can it and trust yourself to it as well.  It is inspired and infallible. The SCRIPTURE FORSAW.  Hebrew 4:12 12For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. It lives.Paul says something like it in Eph. 6 .. the Sword of the spirit is the word of God.  It breathes life into you as you believe God.It is not as mystical as many try and make it sound.  Think and seek and you will find.  You stop worrying as you begin to trust not by trying to not worry.  We MUST LEARN AND DEVELOP AND APPITITE FOR THIS BOOK. Ever realized or find it curious or strange or interesting that Jesus did not write any of the Word of God or at least we have no preserved copy of anything he wrote?  Do you not want to know God then read this book.Paul believed (like Jesus did) in inspiration in John 10 34Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law (truth), ‘I said, “You are gods”’?£ 35If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),  … in your law it says and then he quotes Psalm 82 to argue the point.  David did not write it and it is not law exactly…

    A Psalm of Asaph.1    God stands in the congregation of the mighty;

He judges among the £gods.             Some 1800 verses that Jesus said and 180 is the OT or 10%.  John 19:28 as he hung on the cross…to fulfill the scripture said I thirst  Mat. 27:46 My God My God…  He used the scripture to remind himself of God’s plan.

    ·        Sufficiency - Not just to talk to people he used it to deal with the circumstances he was in at the time a lesson for us.  He quotes Luke 18:31 and many more that they might be fulfilled.  Peter and cutting of off the ear hey put it up how can the scripture be fulfilled etc. This means he believed in the inspiration and the infallibility and the sufficiency of SCRIPTURE.  Rich Man.  Lazarus.  They will not listen to the law and prophets they will not listen anyone risen from the dead (himself)   IT MEANS IT IS ALL WE NEED. It is all the word of God and you can trust it just as he did.  WE do not need angels and visions etc and at times he used other things. My point to you is I might not do all of it and fail at much of it and do not know all of it but there is no part of it I say Oh no you cannot trust that part and this is the good part etc.   SCRIPTURE is much more than words on a page it is living AND JESUS BASED His life on it. So when I hear someone say I just want Jesus but not the BIBLE they really mean I do not want the Jesus of the BIBLE I will make up my own JESUS. You can only know Him through the BIBLE.   CONCLUSION:  All of the OT is about Jesus and they were going back to rule based religion because they were not relying on the SCRIPTURE and not understanding that it all pointed to JESUS. 10For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.”£ If you make the law just about the law then you better do it all.  The law tells you that you need a Savior and you will never ever be good enough to make it. If you read David, Moses etc all about just them you will miss it. John 5: 39You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.41“I do not receive honor from men. 42But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? 45Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” Example:  Men on Emmaus Road…sad  we hoped he would free us

Luke 24: 25Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

44Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. I pray right now that he will open my mind and your minds to the SCRIPTURE.   If you read it like they did then you will try harder and harder to attain a holiness that you will never reach.  Rest in His promise. Without understanding the Gospel you will never understand the Scripture.Without understanding the scripture you will never understand the gospel. He preached the gospel to Abraham through the SCRIPTURE. It is a story of who God is and what has done and is doing and will do in the lives mankind THROUGH JESUS. ACTION:  Move from believed to believing.  Decide to get involved with the Discipleship training that will get you growing and living a productive Christian life.  Become a student of the Scripture. Maybe you are ready to cross the line and receive Christ by faith.

    "The Scripture and the Gospel"

Intro.  Begin to describe my early view of the bible.  Aesop's fables or moral stories to follow and learn wisdom.  We sometimes grow up missing the point of the Bible.  Speak to the issue of the bible is a story.  We are in God's story not God in our story.  The bible is one story not two stories.  I enter God's story by faith and participate in His purpose to make this world new.  40 authors and 66 books all one continuous story.  Not about our little self story.

    Peterson, "Eat this Book"

We will learn that coming to right standing before God has always been one way.

4Have you suffered (experienced)so many things in vain-if indeed it was in vain?  Paul makes it plan that they received grace through the Spirit and he works in us by faith.

5Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?-6just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."£ 7Therefore know (be sure) that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed."£ 9So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

Now it actually says that the SCRIPTURE did something.  It saw something coming or foreseeing something that God would do.  That is very curious to me when I read it.

I want to bring out two opposing points here that has challenged my understanding of the Gospel.  Everything about our lives revolves around the Gospel.  We do not start with the Gospel and then move onto something else. (15:00)

    • 1. We can only know/understand the Gospel through the Scripture.
    • 2. We can only know and understand the scripture through the Gospel.

Everything in the scripture is all about the gospel.  To miss this can mess you up forever.

Now this verse opens up a very important truth about the SCRIPTURE.

Paul refers to Genesis 12:3.  God comes to Abraham not the other way around and also we know that at that time there was no Scripture written.

Genesis was written years after Abraham by Moses.  How does Paul understand the scriptures?  Now let's learn some more heady terms.  We have already discussed Faith - Justification - Sanctification.  Theological terms.

Now we will deal with a few more.

    • Inspiration (Plenary = all)

2 Tim. 3:16 - All scripture is God breathed.  Matt. 19:4,5 And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who £made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,'£ 5and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined/cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? Jesus quotes Genesis 2:24. 24Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Jesus says that God said that... but going to Genesis Moses says that in a commentary of the story.  What I am pointing out is that Jesus says that what Moses said wrote is what God says about the issue.  Acts 4:25 25who £by the mouth of Your servant David have said:

        ‘Why did the nations rage,

And the people plot vain things?

Peter preaches this after Pentecost.  And it says that God spoke through David and said, ... and quotes Psalm 2.  Even though David wrote it God said it and the same for Moses and all of the others. That is inspiration. Jesus says that God said what Moese wrote and Peter says the David wrote what God said.  And Timothy is told that all is inspired.

    • Infallibility - This means that "you can trust it''.

6just as Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."£ 7Therefore know (be sure) that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed.  Notice he believed God not he believed IN God.

He trust what God said.

It lives.

Paul says something like it in Eph. 6 .. the Sword of the spirit is the word of God.  It breathes life into you as you believe God.

It is not as mystical as many try and make it sound.

Do you not want to know God then read this book.

Paul believed (like Jesus did) in inspiration in John 10 34Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law (truth), ‘I said, "You are gods"'?£ 35If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

... in your law it says and then he quotes Psalm 82 to argue the point.  David did not write it and it is not law exactly...

    A Psalm of Asaph.1    God stands in the congregation of the mighty;

                He judges among the £gods.

Some 1800 verses that Jesus said and 180 is the OT or 10%.  John 19:28 as he hung on the cross...to fulfill the scripture said I thirst  Mat. 27:46 My God My God...  He used the scripture to remind himself of God's plan.

    • Sufficiency - Not just to talk to people he used it to deal with the circumstances he was in at the time a lesson for us.

10For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."£

If you make the law just about the law then you better do it all.  The law tells you that you need a Savior and you will never ever be good enough to make it.

If you read David, Moses etc all about just them you will miss it.

John 5: 39You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

41"I do not receive honor from men. 42But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? 45Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you-Moses, in whom you trust. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

Example:  Men on Emmaus Road...sad  we hoped he would free us

Luke 24: 25Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" 27And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

44Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." 45And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

I pray right now that he will open my mind and your minds to the SCRIPTURE.

If you read it like they did then you will try harder and harder to attain a holiness that you will never reach.  Rest in His promise.

Without understanding the Gospel you will never understand the Scripture.

Without understanding the scripture you will never understand the gospel.
